For some young people struggling to survive in Nasarawa State, the promise of quick money can sound like a lifeline. But for some of those who allegedly fell into the hands of an organ-harvesting and human-trafficking syndicate, that promise, according to the police, came with a devastating price — the loss of a kidney.

The Nigeria Police Force has uncovered what it described as a syndicate allegedly targeting vulnerable and uneducated young people in Nasarawa State and its environs, exploiting their financial desperation to facilitate illegal organ harvesting. The case is a disturbing account of how economic vulnerability can allegedly be turned into a weapon against those with little knowledge and few protections.

The Sting Operation in Auta Balifi

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, the investigation began with credible intelligence which prompted operatives of the Special Tactical Squad (STS) to launch a sting operation at about 6pm on August 19, 2026. The operation took place in Auta Balifi, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, resulting in the arrest of four suspects.

Those paraded on August 27, 2026, include Emmanuel Ode, 23; Dr. Benjamin Oyime, 48, a nephrologist and kidney consultant; Dr. Daniel Otukpa, 53, also a nephrologist and Acting Director of Clinical Services; and David Idoko, 25. During the operation, clothes allegedly purchased with proceeds of the crime were recovered as exhibits.

The police investigation suggests that the alleged syndicate understood precisely where to look for its victims. Investigations revealed that the suspects and their accomplices targeted vulnerable and uneducated young persons within Nasarawa State and neighbouring areas, utilizing financial desperation as a primary tool for exploitation.

Recruitment Through Financial Deception

During interrogation, the alleged operation of the syndicate began to emerge. Emmanuel Ode reportedly confessed to recruiting victims under false pretences. Police stated that Ode disclosed how, on April 24, 2026, he lured a 22-year-old man, Samuel Ezekiel, to Wellington Hospital, Life Camp, Abuja, where his kidney was allegedly harvested.

For the procedure, Samuel was reportedly paid $1,250, equivalent to about N1.7 million at the current exchange rate. A second victim also allegedly told investigators that he was lured by the same agent in 2022 to a hospital where his kidney was harvested, receiving a reported payment of N7 million. These figures highlight a system where vital human organs were allegedly transformed into financial transactions.

The recruitment strategy targeted those without stable incomes, for whom a large sum of money appeared to offer an escape from years of hardship. This deception often left victims undergoing medical procedures without fully understanding the legal or health implications of the agreements they were entering.

Systemic Forgery of Official Records

Investigators reportedly uncovered evidence that the network did not rely solely on recruitment but also utilized fabricated documentation to facilitate their activities. Among the documents allegedly manipulated were victims' names, National Identification Numbers (NIN), birth certificates, age declarations, affidavits, and consent letters.

The alleged forging of consent documents is particularly significant to the investigation. Genuine medical consent is required to be informed, voluntary, and free from coercion. If established in court, the use of fabricated documents would suggest an organised attempt to create an appearance of legitimacy around procedures that investigators characterize as criminal.

Involvement of Medical Professionals

The arrest of two medical professionals has added a professional dimension to the case. Dr. Benjamin Oyime and Dr. Daniel Otukpa are both nephrologists associated with Wellington Hospital in Abuja. Their inclusion among the suspects indicates that the investigation has moved into the specialized medical environment where such procedures are performed.

While the allegations against the doctors must be established by a competent court, their arrest has raised questions about how such a network could operate within a medical facility. The Nigeria Police Force has stated that efforts are continuing to apprehend other fleeing suspects connected to the syndicate.

CSP Aniete Iniedu emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to dismantling human trafficking and organ-harvesting networks across the country. For communities in Nasarawa and beyond, the investigation serves as a reminder of how poverty can become an entry point for predators looking to exploit the desperate for business opportunities.
