A 25-year-old businessman was arrested at the Enugu airport after allegedly ingesting 72 wraps of cocaine to cover his wedding costs. The suspect was intercepted by the NDLEA just 12 days after his marriage ceremony while attempting to return to Portugal.

A 25-year-old businessman, Lovely Chukwulobelu, was arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA) in Enugu. The arrest occurred on Thursday, September 25, as Chukwulobelu was preparing to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Portugal via Addis Ababa.
The suspect had recently returned to Nigeria from Portugal on September 13, 2026, to celebrate his wedding. Just 12 days after the ceremony, he was intercepted at the airport's departure hall under suspicion of drug trafficking. The wedding ring was reportedly still fresh on his finger at the time of his detention by security officials.

Following his interception, Chukwulobelu was placed under excretion observation by the anti-narcotics agency. During this period, the suspect egested a total of 72 wraps of a substance identified as Class A cocaine. The NDLEA confirmed that the suspect had ingested the illicit drugs in a high-risk attempt to smuggle them out of the Nigerian jurisdiction.
The discovery highlights the dangerous methods employed by traffickers, as the concealment of such a high volume of capsules within the human body poses life-threatening health risks. Instead of returning to his residence in Portugal as planned, the suspect remained in custody to complete the excretion process under strict medical and security supervision.
During interrogation by NDLEA operatives, Chukwulobelu reportedly claimed that he turned to drug trafficking to offset the significant expenses incurred during his recent wedding. He explained that the financial pressure of the ceremony pushed him toward the illicit trade as a means of settling immediate debts.
Before relocating to Portugal in May 2023, Chukwulobelu operated a car decoration business at the Trade Fair Complex in the Ojo area of Lagos State. His transition from a legitimate businessman to a drug trafficking suspect underscores the risks individuals take when faced with overwhelming financial obligations and the promise of quick money.
The case serves as a sobering reminder of how the pressure to meet social and financial expectations can lead to criminal choices with devastating consequences. While the suspect attributed his actions to wedding costs, the resulting legal implications are expected to include criminal investigation and potential prosecution under federal drug laws.
For the young businessman, the journey that was intended to mark the start of a new life as a married man has instead shifted toward a legal battle. The incident further emphasizes the continued vigilance of the NDLEA at Nigeria’s international gateways in curbing the flow of illicit narcotics across borders.
