Ambassador Lola Akande has formally assumed her mission in Sweden after presenting her Letters of Credence to King Carl XVI Gustaf at the Royal Palace. The milestone marks a new chapter in bilateral relations, with a focus on trade, innovation, and strengthening ties with the Nigerian diaspora.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden, Ambassador Lola Akande, has formally assumed her diplomatic responsibilities in the country after presenting her Letters of Credence to His Majesty, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
Akande presented the credentials on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, formally establishing her as Nigeria’s accredited representative to the Kingdom of Sweden. The milestone marked the formal commencement of Akande’s diplomatic duties and opened a new chapter in Nigeria’s engagement with Sweden.
The ceremony, conducted with the pageantry and traditions associated with the presentation of diplomatic credentials in Sweden, featured ceremonial honours. This included a corps marshall and formal procession as the Nigerian envoy proceeded to the Royal Palace for the presentation.

Following the ceremony at the Royal Palace, a reception was held in Akande’s honour at the Nigerian House in Stockholm. The event attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including diplomats, government officials, members of the Nigerian community, and representatives of the Swedish business community.
The gathering brought together Ambassadors and members of the African diplomatic community, officials of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and members of the Corps of African Women Ambassadors. The reception also hosted Swedish nationals and other invited guests, serving as a platform to celebrate the envoy’s accreditation while highlighting the longstanding diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Sweden.
The event provided an avenue to discuss opportunities for deepening cooperation between both nations. Key areas identified for greater engagement include trade and investment, innovation, cultural exchange, and people-to-people relations.
Akande’s formal accreditation is expected to provide fresh impetus to Nigeria-Sweden relations as both countries explore opportunities to broaden engagements among governments, businesses, cultural institutions, and citizens. The mission aims to foster stronger partnerships across several areas of mutual interest.
Her diplomatic assignment also places significant emphasis on deeper engagement with the Nigerian community in Sweden. The contributions of these stakeholders are viewed as essential to further strengthening the relationship between the two countries and broadening the scope of bilateral cooperation.
The presentation of the Letters of Credence represents more than a ceremonial milestone; it ushers in a new phase of official engagement for Nigeria’s representative in Sweden. This transition is expected to lead to increased cooperation and more robust partnerships between the two nations in the coming years.
