Recognition of Sporting Excellence

The Benin Technical College Old Students Association, BETECOSA, has rewarded the school’s Principal Cup-winning football team with cash gifts, celebrating the young players for their triumph in the competition. The champions were honoured at the school compound in Ugbowo, Benin, where old students gathered to celebrate the team’s achievement and encourage the players to pursue excellence both on and off the pitch.

The gesture was made possible through the collective contributions of several prominent alumni members, including Sir Ralph Karieren, Chairman of the Lagos Chapter; Dr Steve Ayiyi, Class of '84; Mr Ik Osunbor, Worldwide President; and Engr Emma Monye, Chairman of the Benin Chapter. A representative from the Chairman of the Board of Technical Education was also in attendance to witness the presentation and support the development of technical education through sports.

Coaching and Student Discipline

Speaking on the team’s journey to victory, the Games Master and coach, Mr. Sharon Akhigbe Ekhiwere, commended the players for their discipline, resilience, and determination throughout the competition. He noted that the victory was a result of hard work and a focused approach to the tournament's challenges.

He further urged the young footballers to maintain the same level of commitment and discipline as they move forward. He emphasized the importance of balancing their burgeoning sporting careers with their technical education to ensure long-term success beyond the field of play.

Mentorship and Institutional Bonds

The school principal, Mr Friday Izedonmwen, praised BETECOSA for recognising the achievement of the students, describing the celebration as a reflection of the enduring bond between the school and its old students. The event provided an opportunity for the alumni to interact with the young champions, share memories of their days at the institution, and offer career words of encouragement.

Adding a professional sporting perspective to the ceremony was Mr. Monday Kanu, the master of ceremonies and a former Games Prefect. Kanu, a former Bendel Insurance FC player and member of the 1988 Howard University NCAA Championship Team, used his experience to mentor the young players, urging them to dream beyond the local football pitch and make the most of the opportunities before them.

The Ugbowo school compound erupted in celebration as students, old students, and staff joined in the traditional BTC chants to honour the champions. The ceremony concluded with the formal presentation of cash gifts to the victorious players and renewed calls for the students to sustain the discipline that brought them the Principal Cup title.
